Step 1: How To Start

Summary

Here's what you need to make an old computer usable, available for donation, and away from landfills.

It has been said that it is better to give than to receive, and for those with legacy computers that is surely the case. You are able to help others with your donation, a benefit that may well lead to better grades, more income, and greater socialization for the recipient. Each donated computer means one less toxic item in our landfills. And, not to be overlooked, it may be possible to earn a tax deduction.

Generally speaking, laptops and notebooks are preferred because they have built-in screens, keyboards, speakers, and touchpads. There are no additional purchases required to have a working system. However, desktop systems can also be suitable donations when packaged with a keyboard, screen, speakers, mouse, and mouse pad.

Certified Computers

Not all computers qualify for re-use. The key to donations is the availability of the Chrome OS Flex option from Google, a FREE and quick way to upgrade computers and extend their lifespan. There are several requirements.

  • The equipment generally requires 4 gigabytes of RAM, 16 GB of disk storage, an Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible device, the ability to be booted from a USB drive, and a suitable power cord. The power cord should be labeled so it’s easy to match with the donation. Check this link for a full list of particulars.
  • However — and perhaps much easier for most people — Google maintains a list of certified computers that can readily use the Chrome OS Flex system. Equipment not on this list may be able to use the Flex software, but most likely a certified machine is best.
  • Recipient dignity and respect are enormously important. Donations must be working, clean, complete, and presentable.

Installation

The installation process is remarkably easy. Just get a flash drive with at least 16 GB, go to the Chrome OS Flex page, and follow the instructions. That’s about it.
